5 Signs That Your Child's Head Injury Might Be Serious

It might seem normal for kids to trip, fall and have minor accidents while they are playing, however, some of these so-called minor "accidents" might be more serious than you think. For example, a seemingly simple accident could still result in a more serious head injury for your child, which might mean that he or she needs medical attention. These are a few signs that your child's head injury might be more serious than you think.

1. Your Child Won't Stop Crying

A few tears might not seem like a big deal after a minor injury. If your child won't stop crying and is still upset long after the incident occurs, however, it is time to get worried. This could mean that the injury -- and the pain -- are more serious than you originally thought.

2. Vomiting

If your child vomits after an injury occurs, you might have something to worry about. This is certainly true if your child vomits several times after an accident or injury.

3. Head or Neck Pain is Reported

Don't take complaints of head or neck pain lightly; your child might be in more pain than you think, or the so-called minor injury could be caused by a more serious issue. Children who are older might complain about head or neck pain, while younger children who aren't yet able to verbalize their feelings might just be more fussy or irritable than usual.

4. Won't Wake Up

If your child falls asleep after a head injury, it is important to keep a close eye on him or her. If you try to wake your little one up after a head injury and don't have much success, it's definitely important to seek medical treatment as soon as possible. This could be the sign of a concussion.

5. Seems to Be Out of Sorts

If your child seems to be out of sorts, such as if he or she is awake but is having a hard time walking or talking normally, then you should not ignore the situation. This could be a sign that your little one's injury is more serious than you originally thought.

As you can see, there are a few signs that you can look out for after your child has a seemingly minor head injury. If you notice any of these five things after a normal fall or accident, it is important to take your little one to the hospital as soon as possible.
